Chaki-Chan

People here try to share their knowledge on anything to do with Asia when they find out I am an Asian (which is obvious). Toyota, Yamaha, Isuzu, Chaki-chan…. “Chaki-chan?,” I asked. After repeating this unfamiliar word for a while, I finally got that they were talking about Jackie Chiang of Hong Kong. Sushi is hardly known in this rural town, unlike in the US, but Cho-fun (fried rice) is a favorite dish of many. Cho-fun here to me is over-seasoned, as Dominicans prefer strong flavor. It has a dark brown color with chunk of borned meats. When I ordered it for the first time in a local restaurant, I thought, wao, they have a Southern cuisine, Jyanbaraya!


チャキチャン

こちらの人はよく、私がアジア人ということで、アジアに関する彼らの知識を共有したがる。トヨタ、ヤマハ、イスズ、チャキチャン・・・　ん？チャキチャン？　何度か聞き返し、繰り返され、ジャッキー・チェンのことだと分かった。　また、アメリカとは違い、「スシ」はこの街では殆ど知られていない。しかし「チョファン」、つまりチャーハンはドミニカ人に好まれているようだ。ドミニカ化してしまっており、ご飯全体がこげ茶になるまで味つけされ、骨付きの肉が入っていることが多い。地元レストランで初めてチョファンを注文したとき、アメリカ南部のジャンバラヤがここにもあるのか！と思ったくらいだ。
